Discovering Velingrad: Beyond the Glitter of the SPA Capital

Velingrad has long been recognized as the undisputed SPA Capital of the Balkans—a prestigious title backed by an impressive record of over 80 mineral springs, with temperatures ranging from refreshing 28°C to scorching 91°C. The resort welcomes visitors with nearly 280 sunny days a year, virtually zero wind, and incredibly crisp mountain air—a combination that acts as a soothing balm for the lungs.

But beyond the healing power of its waters and climate, this region harbors fascinating secrets: ancient myths, lost Thracian sanctuaries, and thrilling family adventures that often fly under the radar of the average tourist. Behind the modern facade of this popular resort lies a completely different side of the Rhodope Mountains—one that is absolutely worth experiencing with your kids.

The Ancient Bessi and the Birth of a Modern Town

More than 2,000 years ago, these lands were the spiritual heart of the ancient world and home to the fierce Thracian tribe known as the Bessi. Chronicled as the guardians of the Dionysian and Orphic mysteries, they held secrets that drew the ancient world’s most powerful leaders.

Great commanders, including Alexander the Great, journeyed to the sanctuary on Ostretz Peak (towering above today’s town) to read their destinies in the giant flames bursting from the altar of Dionysus.

Yet, while those rituals were loud and public, the Bessi closely guarded the quiet teachings of Orphism—knowledge regarding the immortality of the soul, strict asceticism, and secret formulas for navigating the Underworld.

Fast forward to modern times: Velingrad officially appeared on the map in 1948, when three neighboring villages—Chepino, Kamenitsa, and Ladzhene—merged. The new town was named as a tribute to Vela Peeva, a local partisan who left a vivid mark on the region’s history.

The Legend of Kleptuza: A Love Written in Water

One of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking legends of the Rhodopes belongs to the girl who gave her name to the iconic Kleptuza Spring.

If you’ve ever visited Velingrad, you’ve undoubtedly strolled around the large lake with its colorful paddleboats in the Chepino neighborhood. This is Kleptuza—the largest karst spring in Bulgaria, pumping out between 500 and 1,180 liters of ice-cold water every single second.

According to folklore, every drop of this water is a tear shed by a young girl in love.

Centuries ago, a girl named Kleptuza lived here, blessed with otherworldly beauty. Her heart belonged to a poor local youth. However, blinded by greed, her parents arranged for her to marry a wealthy but old and heartless local nobleman. Upon hearing the news, Kleptuza wept bitterly, vowing: “I would rather the earth swallow me whole than belong to a man I do not love!”

On the eve of the wedding, Kleptuza fled. Her father’s men quickly cornered her at the base of the cliffs. Faced with the horror of an unwanted marriage, she fell to her knees and begged the mountain to save her. In that exact moment, the earth split open and swallowed her up. Immediately after, a pure, icy, never-freezing spring gushed from the spot. The locals named it in her honor—a timeless symbol of pure, eternal love.

The Rhodope Narrow-Gauge Railway: An Engineering Masterpiece

Did you know that Velingrad is a key stop on Bulgaria’s only functioning narrow-gauge railway? The route between Septemvri and Dobrinishte is so breathtaking that The Guardian ranked it among the most picturesque rail journeys in the world.

Building this engineering marvel took 24 years of grueling labor (1921–1945). A fun piece of trivia: at its partial opening in 1939, the locomotive was personally driven by Tsar Boris III, who was a certified railway engineer! Today, this track is a monument to human genius, featuring 35 tunnels and unique mountain curves that literally trace “figure-eights” and “sixes” along the steep Rhodope slopes.

Tsepina Station: From Forgotten Ruins to a Charming Museum

Our starting point was Tsepina Station—a place that captures your heart instantly with its alpine charm and solitude. Tucked away in the greenery of the gorge, this station looks straight out of a postcard. The journey there offers incredibly scenic views where the tracks literally squeeze between jagged rocks and the rushing river, revealing a pristine mountain panorama at every turn.

However, Tsepina Station wasn’t always this glamorous. For years, the building sat abandoned, derelict, and falling into oblivion. Its salvation came through the immense efforts of the “For the Narrow-Gauge” civil association and dozens of volunteers. The building was fully renovated with lots of love and hard labor, and today, it houses a unique Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum.

💡 Good to Know: Because the museum is run entirely by volunteers, it doesn’t have fixed working hours. If you want to peek inside and unlock its doors, reach out ahead of time to the guys from the “For the Narrow-Gauge” association—they will be more than happy to help you out!

🎒 First-Hand Practical Tips for the Railway

  • Plan Ahead: Check the narrow-gauge schedules early on the BDZ (Bulgarian State Railways) website. Pro tip: the train numbers for this line always start with the digits 16.
  • Tickets on Board: There is no ticket office at Tsepina Station. Don’t worry though—you can easily buy your tickets directly from the conductor inside the train once you board.
  • The Perfect Family Plan: Since we were traveling with our little one, we tailored our itinerary to a child’s attention span. We rode the train for just one stop, while dad drove ahead to meet us at the next station.
  • A Quick Logistics Warning: If you try our meet-up strategy, research your route carefully beforehand! Some of the narrow-gauge stops are completely inaccessible by car, so choose your meeting stations wisely.

Dorkovo Pliocene Park: Bulgaria’s “Jurassic Park”

Just 15 km from Velingrad, in the village of Dorkovo, lies Europe’s largest paleontological site from the Pliocene epoch. Inside this unique, dome-like museum, you can stand eye-to-eye with a massive, 4-meter-tall replica of a prehistoric mastodon that roamed these lands 5 million years ago.

Our little guy was absolutely thrilled! The museum is fantastic for young kids because it’s a quick visit—meaning there’s zero risk of them losing interest or getting overtired. As an added bonus, the museum grounds offer a majestic panoramic view over the entire village.

To be perfectly honest, ticket prices felt a bit steep for adults at €5 (around 10 BGN), but thankfully, children under 7 get in for free.

🔥 Money-Saving Tip: The very same ticket grants you access to the medieval Tsepina Fortress, located just a stone’s throw away. We didn’t have time to hike up to it on this trip, but if you do, combining the two sites is a fantastic idea.

Our small suggestion: It would be amazing if the museum introduced modern 3D projection mapping showcasing scenes of the prehistoric savanna, rather than relying solely on background sounds. That would make the experience truly mind-blowing!

The Two Faces of Velingrad: Megahotels vs. Smart Coziness

After immersing yourself in the authentic, quiet corners of the region, returning to the town center can offer quite a contrast. Arriving in modern Velingrad, the first thing you notice is the massive scale of contemporary construction. Over the last few years, the town has become synonymous with glitz and grandiose five-star complexes.

However, these architectural giants often feel a bit unnatural against the backdrop of a cozy mountain town. While some tourists love this kind of mass tourism, for parents traveling with toddlers, it often brings more stress than relaxation. Crowded restaurants, keeping up appearances, and the feeling that every toddler meltdown is drawing stares in a cavernous lobby quickly remind you why you wanted to escape the big city in the first place…

To truly experience all the cultural and natural wealth of the region without the noise and vanity of massive hotel lobbies, you need a different kind of base. This is where Liberte Suites steps in as the smart alternative to the five-star mastodons.

A massive perk for families is that the legendary Kaferinova Mineral Beach is right next door to the complex. To complete parental bliss, there is also a great kids’ water slide. You can easily combine healthy relaxation with playtime without wasting any time commuting.
